Arts Connection Foundation, Miami.
"The exhibition "Difficult Readings" by Jesús Hdez-Güero at Arts Connection Foundation brings together some of his most recent work on the mechanisms of power and its strategies of representation in authoritarian contexts. The Orwellian atmosphere that pervades the photographs, installations, and videos that make up the exhibition refers to concrete events in Cuban society, as well as some episodes in the complex relationship between the island government and the United States. The root of everything in Hdez-Güero's proposal is the assembly (and disassembly) of history based on images and through the application of documentary and allegorical procedures. More than refuting the cynical implementation of deceptive statements, the exhibition questions the methods and means used by those in power to induce collective amnesia. Perhaps the only possible strategy to dismantle the odious veil of artifice is, as the artist proposes, to reproduce the aphonic scandal of images until silence speaks."

February 2 - March 29, 2024
NegPos | Centre d'Art Photographique, Nîmes, France.
"The artist reviews archives and obtains the best profiles of the faces of contemporary personalities, women and men who practiced politics, social thought, philosophy, economics, who waged war or called for peace. All of them, in a globally, they impacted our time.
With patience and analog rigor he prints these faces on photographic paper and confronts images, fighting with angles to create puzzles of only two pieces, in which he makes compatible the same gesture that underlies two characters, often spokespersons of politically opposite "signs."
By forming these hybrids, he seeks to demonstrate the continuity of one in the “other.” The features of this new being, half this, half that, are, at the same time, “perfectly possible” [2], totally credible. In each new image that he constructs, he demonstrates the polysemy that underlies certain performances and poses that we assumed were unique and that we often assumed to be our own.
The constructed portrait, more psychological than physical, acts as a spring before which our sensitivity and convictions cannot remain indifferent, since the visual result carries, like a magnet of powerful poles, the entire load of feelings - sympathy or contempt. – that the protagonists generated for us.
It bothers us to see our paradigms fused in that representational unity and struggle of opposites with those we once identified as enemies, but above all, faced with this recreated portrait, we face the suspicion that we breathe in the trap of conjurers dreamcatchers, that we assist to a compelling performance staged again and again throughout the ages."

"In the center and from the top you can see everything that happens around us inside the building. This is how panoptics usually work. Traditionally, their acceptance has referred to the surveillance and control of human behavior. This The exhibition explores and expands its meaning to approach the motivations and similarities that exist between the leading figures, the historical processes and the structure of our most recent universal history within the framework of the construction of the Nation-State and geopolitics. His ready-mades and the symbolic representations with the narration and post-photography of the works of Jesús Hdez-Güero and Avelino Sala introduce personal reflections and nuances on lived and past reality with a careful, polished, poetic aesthetic and in a certain carefree measure, whose objective is to exert a change on the present and review the official history and its narrative on issues that remain do difficult to deal with by society."

THE ONJECT AND THE IMAGE (THIS IS NOT CHAIR EITHER)
Miami
Curated by Aluna Curatorial Collective (Adriana Herrera and Willy Castellanos)
March - may, 2017
Aluna Art Foundation will participate in the inauguration of Concrete Space, an alternative art project that will open its doors to the public next Saturday, March 18th, with the exhibition “The Object and The Image (This is Not a Chair Either)”.
Curated by Aluna Curatorial Collective (Adriana Herrera and Willy Castellanos), the exhibition will feature invited artist Chema Madoz, and will recover historic works by Hexágono: Equipo de Creación Colectiva(Havana, 1982-1985), integrated by Consuelo Castañeda, Humberto Castro, Sebastián Elizondo, Abigail García, María Elena Morera and Tonel.
The exhibition will give place to a prompt dialog between local artists from different nationalities, and will feature works from (in alphabetical order): Francis Acea (Cuba/USA), Mauricio Alejo (Mexico), Néstor Arenas (Cuba/USA), Susana Blasco (Spain), Karim Borjas (Venezuela/France), Álvaro José Brunet (Cuba), Isaac Cordal (Spain), Marina Font (Argentina/USA), Xavier G-Solís (Spain), Juan Sí González (Cuba/USA), Jesús Hdez-Güero (Cuba), Ronald Morán (Salvador), Martha María Pérez Bravo (Cuba/Mexico), Cecilia Paredes (Peru/USA), Rainy Silvestre (Cuba/USA) and Viviana Zargón (Argentina).
The Object and the Image (This Is Not a Chair Either), brings back the quest of a group of artists to exploit this subject. They work from different visions and approaches in the creation of a hybrid and highly polemic object – an alter object -, whose values move around the intersection of the constructive practices of installation, sculpture, and the documentation of an authorial experience, and whose final product is a photograph in itself.
In this sense, the exhibition also exposes the artifact –the source of the exhibited photographs – uniting under one roof two instances traditionally separated in exhibition spaces: the image and its referent. This suitable coincidence will not only allow us a glimpse into the implicit mechanisms of image production, but will also propose to the spectator a journey through that zone that is neither the object nor its image: Rather, it is the mental process that transformed each artifact (in Latin “that which is made with art”) into a mine field that questions the stable condition of the “order of things,” and the concept of reality.}

TOUCHED, 10TH LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL
Liverpool
Curated by Lorenzo Fusi
18 Sept - 28 Nov 2010
In 2002, Tania Bruguera initiated Cátedra Arte de Conducta, the first performance and time-based art studies programme in Latin America devoted to political art. According to the artist, this alternative art school was designed to explore ‘the way in which ethics, ideology and history intertwine with memory, sociology, history of art’. The Cátedra, an enterprise now concluded, promoted a new generation of political artists whose international recognition is the most important result of Bruguera’s initiative. The former participants (now artists in their own right) will work in Liverpool around two themes: the utopian city and Allan Kaprow’s cultural and artistic legacy. These two apparently separate topics are in fact linked through their mutual aims: they attempt to ‘touch’ the city; they deconstruct and question the traditional notion of museum (as the only physical and mental space where art can be presented, consumed and produced); and they cut across the demarcation lines that separate politics, art and life.
Bruguera and Lorenzo Fusi jointly selected the participants committed to this collective experiment of institutional critique: Ana Olema Hernández Matamoro, Ariel Orozco Rodriguez, Carlos Martiel, Reynier Leyva Novo, Lavastida Cordovi Hamlet, Jeanette Chavez Ruiz, Jesus Hernández-Güero, James Roger Bonachea Guerra, José Fidel García Valenzuela, La Vaughn Belle, Levi Enrique Orta Mendoza, Loidys Carnero Pineda, Núria Güell Serra, Omni- Zonafranca (group), Yaima Carrazana Ciudad, Yali Romagosa Sanchez, and Bram Kaprow.

Video Screening Programme
States of Exchange video screening programme features artists' shorts and experimental documentaries. From the moment video arrived in Cuba it became an alternative mode of communication exchange - it provided artists with a new means of creative freedom and rewrote the terms of the art-institutions relationship in Cuba. During the period of liberalisation in 1990s video equipment became more readily available and the medium became popular. It not only had the advantage of being self sufficient it was also low cost and offered new means of circulation and exhibiting. Artists' video work created in Cuba is particularly distinctive due to its collaborative bent and is often characterised by low-tech aesthetics. Video art is not often exhibited in Cuban galleries, possibly due to what Machado describes as its ‘merciless account of reality'. However word is spread through the grapevine and the works are showcased in ‘pop up' galleries off the official circuit - spreading the realities of Cuban life into places far and wide.
Artist short videos include: Eran 47 de Memoria (They Were 47 Years from Memory) by Raychel Carrión, Reconstruyendo al Héroe (Reconstructing the Hero) by Javier Castro, Cuba Baila (Cuba Dances) by Alexis de la O Joya, Zona Afectada (Affected Zone) by Alex Hernández and Asori Soto, Informes de Hechos Vividos (Report on Lived Events) by Jesús Hernández-Güero, Polémica (Controversy)and Aiki by Luis o Miguel, A veces prefiero callar (Sometimes I'd rather shutup)by Lazáro Saavedra, Búnker (Bunker) by Renier Quer, Espíritu (al servicio de todos) (Spirit (at everyone's service)) by Adonis Flores.Experimental documentaries include: Café con leche (White Coffee) by Manuel Zayas, Model Town by Laimir Fano, Buscándote Havana (Looking for You, Havana) by Alina Rodríguez and Despertando a Quan Tri (Waking Quan Tri) by Gustavo Pérez.
